Rules 6-3 in favor of First Amendment right to political speech.
This week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Senator Ted Cruz in a vote of 6-3 regarding the repayment of personal loans to his campaign. The majority said that it is a violation of the First Amendment for the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to put a $250,000 cap on personal loans to political candidates.
The ruling, authored by Chief Justice Roberts and joined by the conservative justices, found that such a cap “burdens core political speech without proper justification.”
The three liberal judges dissented, saying that no amount of free speech should enable massive corporate payouts to political candidates.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for the justices of the Supreme Court as they uphold First Amendment protections.
- For Justice Breyer as his tenure with the Supreme Court draws to a close.
- For the decisions of the Supreme Court to honor God as the justices interpret the law and Constitution.
